Cozy Reader privacy policy

Effective October 3, 2026

Cozy Reader keeps your reading history with you. There are no Cozy Reader accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. This policy explains exactly what leaves your device and why.

What stays on your device

Your library is stored in Cozy Reader's storage on your device: books, statuses, ratings, notes, dates, genres, tags, lists, reading goals, reading sessions, and covers you add. So are your settings, themes, and backdrop photos. None of it is sent to the developer.

If you choose a photo for a cover or a theme, Cozy Reader saves a resized copy of only that photo. It cannot see the rest of your photo library. Saving a shared list as an image asks for permission to add to your photos, and nothing more.

iCloud sync

When your device is signed in to iCloud, Cozy Reader syncs your library through Apple's CloudKit to a private database in your own iCloud account, so it appears on your other iPhones and iPads. Only your Apple Account can read that database; the developer cannot. Apple's privacy policy covers iCloud. Settings, themes, and backdrop photos don't sync.

Requests to Open Library

To find books and show their covers, Cozy Reader requests public information directly from Open Library (openlibrary.org and covers.openlibrary.org). These requests include what you search for, such as a title, author, or ISBN. Like any web request, Open Library receives your IP address. The Internet Archive's privacy policy covers how Open Library handles those requests.

Reading timer, widget, and Siri

The running timer is kept in a storage area on your device that Cozy Reader shares with its widget and Live Activity, so they can show it. It doesn't leave your device. When you use Siri or a Focus filter to control the timer, Apple handles the request, and Cozy Reader receives only the command, such as Start or Stop.

Import, backup, and sharing

Cozy Reader sends data elsewhere only when you ask it to. Importing from Goodreads reads only the file you pick. Back Up Now creates a file you control, and weekly automatic backups are saved on your device, in the Files app. Sharing a list uses the standard iOS share sheet, and you choose the recipient. A shared JSON file leaves out your notes and covers.

Beta testing with TestFlight

If you test a beta version through Apple's TestFlight, Apple shares some information with the developer: the name and email address you were invited with, your device model and iOS version, install and session counts, crash reports, and any feedback or screenshots you choose to send. This information is used only to fix problems and improve Cozy Reader. Apple's TestFlight terms and privacy policy also apply.

Deleting your data

Deleting a book removes it from your device and, with iCloud sync on, from your other devices. Deleting the app removes the library from that device. The synced copy stays in your iCloud account. To remove it, delete your books in Cozy Reader while iCloud sync is on, before you delete the app. If you need help, email the address below.

Children

Cozy Reader does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
